Oxide Ink Backgrounds

Today I am showing two cards that I made after a time of experimenting with the smooshing technique with Distress Oxide inks. I have wanted to try this in more detail for a while and now that I have a crafty space that is not the dining room table, I started a session.

I used Canson XL Watercolor paper and cut it down to 4×6 inches in size – giving me four panels from one sheet of paper. My first card used the oxide colors Carved Pumpkin, Speckled Egg, Mustard Seed and Rusty Hinge. I made sure to dry the panel between each layer so that the colors layered, rather than blended.
I then cut the panel down to 4×5.25 inches and matted it on a black cardstock before adding it to a white cardbase. I cut the sentiment die cut out twice and glued them together to give some dimension. The precision tip on the glue bottle was such a life saver on these fine outlines of the die cut. Using a Spellbinders die set, I created the little flowers. I completed the card by stamping and clear heat embossing the strip sentiment.

My second card is made in a similar manner in that the background is smooshed Distress Oxide inks in the colors Vintage Photo, Ground Espresso, Rusty Hinge and Peacock Feathers. Again I dried the layers before adding the next one so that they did not mix.
Once it was dry, I stenciled a splatter pattern over it with Transfer Gel Duo and when it was dry, I put Rose Gold foil over it and ran it through my laminator. That placed a beautiful shine on the card background. Here is a close up picture.

I completed the card by adding the background panel to a white cardbase and then adding the artist palette using a Honey Bee Stamps die set. The paint spots were covered in Nuvo Crystal Glaze to give them the look of wet paint. The sentiment was made up from different alphabet dies from my stash and a stamped strip.
